“Out On A Limb”
An Oil On Canvas ‘2002’
By Linda “Rainbow” Westlund

Why concern ourselves with a remote island in the Indian Ocean, off of the southeast coast of Africa? Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world, is a varied landscape. She is a 995 mile journey through barren desert, Savanna swamps, coastal plains and dense lush tropical rainforest. At least she used to be.
She is the last stronghold of the lemur, a shy and gentle primate species, that’s a very distant cousin to us, Homo Sapiens Sapiens.
Her lush forests cradle delicate species of orchids and rare plants like; Rosy Periwinkle, with it’s blush pink blossoms. Rosy Periwinkle is used to treat childhood leukemia.
Madagascar, is a metaphorical Garden of Eden, laden with exquisite and extremely rare botanicals and animals thatare an expression of mother earth. She, like so many primitive habitats around the world, is changing. The needs of the new millennium industrialized, digitized and homogenized societies like ours, prioritizes these little clusters of a by gone era into vast resources for the societies like ours, instead of the real resources of clean air, water and soil.
Artists try to recapture some of the beauty of these places in image or in verse, in hopes of renewing that sense of wonder and reverence for the earth. The earth mother that primitive societies have held so dear is in you andin me.
“Out On A Limb”. We are running out of clean air, space and time to fix it all. Like all of our ancestral cousins and the lemur, once abundant through out the globe will we too, soon be restricted to the ever narrowing habitats that will support the quality of life that we take for granted? Unlike the fate of the lemurs and all the extraordinary life, this choice is ours to make.
