“Paradigm Shift”
An Oil On Canvas ‘2002’
By Linda “Rainbow” Westlund

We, the human species stand at the threshold of a paradigm shift. To perceive this change however, one must choose to open his heart and his mind. One must let go the prejudices that separate one heart from another. One must stretch his intellect to see beyond the lines that divide, and look at the world and at himself in a new way. Within the last few decades technological enhancements have equipped human beings with the ability to wade out into the cosmic ocean. Our earth beheld from this new vantage point, like other celestial bodies has a semblance to a single living organism. We can see that the familiar lines of demarcation drawn on maps that formed the old model of boundary lines and borders simply don’t exist. A hundred years ago a Sioux Indian mystic named Black Elk foreshadowed this change in perspective when in a “sacred manner saw the shape of all things in the spirit, and the shape of all things as they must live together, as one being.” “The artist and the mystic share a similar path the difference being that the mystic doesn’t have a craft .” As an artist through my craft, these “Circle Paintings”, I’m sometimes led, like the mystic to see beyond the veil of time and space. Paradigm Shift was completed two weeks before the Sept. 11th tragedy. In the painting ,the Eye of Ra seen through the capstone pyramid cracking the glass of the window, one could associate with the Middle East. On the lower edge of the window sill, a cityscape with the two tall towers surrounded in smoke, could remind one of New York and the Trade Towers. Perhaps like Black Elk I too was seeing in a sacred manner, a larger view; a new paradigm, if you will.
